How Will a Pilates Machine Enhance Your Workout?
If you’re considering using Pilates as a method of strength training, or are already doing so, you’ve probably started with a beginner class or video learning the fundamentals through basic mat work. You’ve probably either seen or heard about Pilates machines, and wondered how, or if, these machines enhance your strength training.
The Essence of Pilates is Resistance
Since the basic idea of Pilates is to use resistance to strengthen your body’s core, it makes sense that a Pilates machine could add more resistance to your workout, and therefore enhance your results. This is certainly true, and if you have a Pilates machine available to use at the gym, or at home, you will definitely benefit from being able to customize the amount of resistance added to your workout. Tailoring workouts to work specific parts of your body harder than others can also be more convenient, since you can control several different points of resistance on one Pilates machine. You can also utilize familiar exercises at increased levels, which may be ideal if you don’t have the time to invest in a new class or video.
But a Pilates machine is not essential to increasing your strength, or even increasing the resistance to which your body is responding during your Pilates workout. More advanced Pilates mat work is just as challenging as a Pilates machine workout. You can learn new Pilates exercises that force your body to respond to increased resistance. If you need some variety in your workout; then advanced mat work will certainly give you something new to master. Another benefit of Pilates mat work over a Pilates machine is that it can be more cost effective. With a few videos and some space, you can learn all levels of Pilates mat work in the comfort of your own home with no extra equipment.
Mat work and Machine Work Should Be Complimentary
If you are able to, don’t limit your Pilates workouts to strictly mat work or machine work. Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, is known to have used both methods to practice Pilates. If you’re getting tired of one method, try the other. Find a video or a gym class that uses both mat work and a Pilates machine in tandem to enhance your experience. Neither mat work nor machine work will produce better or worse results; rather they both just need to be utilized correctly. Find what works best for you and have fun!
